Animal help in the Dominican Republic - for a better cooperation between humans and animals

When we moved to the Dominican Republic in 2004 I had a dream. I wanted to dedicate my life to the animals here and to permanently give them a better life in their natural surroundings. Mistreated animals, animals that starved to death, animals that were poisoned or that died of illnesses that could have been avoided, abandoned animals that nobody wanted, in short – animals that have neither experienced hope nor love.

The first years were more than difficult – I often felt like I was fighting against windmills, but not once did I think of giving up.

At the castration-campaign today we hope to be able to castrate the thousandth animal, this is a great success. A success that I would like to share with everybody who supported and believed in us, but also a success, that wouldn't have been possible without the help of the Dominican population.

The years we spent educating the public and organising castration campaigns are finally bearing fruits. When I see the animals today, how healthy and well-fed they are, how they are loved by their owners and how fewer animals have to eke out a sad life in the streets, it makes me very happy. I would also like to share this happiness with everybody – with the people who donated and actively helped, with the judging panel of the Goldene Pfote and everybody, who gave us their vote during the online-voting and of course my husband Buschi, without whose help I would never have had the strength to carry on after various set backs. I thank you all!

Together we have achieved so many good and sensible goals, but we are not done by far. In Las Terrenas the situation has been very much improved for many animals, but still there is immeasurable misery, pain and torture everywhere. We can only rest when no animal in the Dominican Republic has to suffer anymore. 

There is so much more to do, let’s get on with it!
